“We need to create a world where everyone is equal so that we can achieve true equity and justice.”
Gannett Fleming kicked off Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and more (LGBTQ+) Pride Month in 2021 by launching our LGBTQ+ of Gannett Fleming employee resource group (ERG), and we’re proud of our own Heather Wilkie for her hand in making this happen. As the chair of this ERG’s steering committee, she wants employees to feel comfortable bringing their complete selves to work and to be open and accepting of their colleagues. Heather shared additional thoughts in our recent LGBTQ+ Pride Month video as part of our Lift Every Voice video series.
In addition to championing the LGBTQ+ ERG, she serves as an associate business analyst for GeoDecisions, a division of Gannett Fleming. With an eye for user experience, Heather tests GeoDecisions’ applications and works with clients to understand their needs, from requirements gathering through implementation. She is also a passionate graphic designer, photographer, and animal lover.
We asked Heather a few questions to get to know her:
What’s one thing that surprised you about working at Gannett Fleming?
I was pleasantly surprised by the strong emphasis on an inclusive company culture and our CEO and COO’s genuine support for our employee resource groups and their initiatives. To know that your employer fully supports you is vital. Not all companies are as dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion as Gannett Fleming is.
What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?
This summer, I’m looking forward to taking a class on user experience/user interface (UX/UI) and wireframing, a means of laying out a website before it has been coded.
Why is it important to have LGBTQ+ representation in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) community?
The STEM community isn’t always the most diverse, which is why it’s essential to move in a direction where we have more representation, so that everyone feels they belong.
What are some of your goals for the LGBTQ+ ERG?
We have many, including continuing to build a connected LGBTQ+ community at Gannett Fleming, finding more LGBTQ+ training and resources for the firm’s learning network, sponsoring some local events, and looking into other outreach opportunities. We also continue to coordinate a “lunch ‘n learn” series, titled “Rainbow Connection.”
