In emergency situations, teams must act decisively and immediately. In this case study, learn how DDOT responded after discovering floor beams on the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge showed significant deterioration and section loss. The panel will discuss DDOT’s decisions, why they made those choices, and key takeaways for reacting to emergencies. See how teams can respond when emergency situations require accelerated design, procurement, and construction.

Additional panelists include Richard Kenney, PE, and Gang Zhang, PhD, PE, PMP, from District Department of Transportation (DDOT).

Cybersecurity’s Impacts

Cyberattacks that shut down business operations, damage firms’ reputations, and result in litigation and fines are increasing in the construction industry. However, a recent study by IBM and the Ponemon Institute found that 74% of construction-related organizations have not formed a plan or implemented a cybersecurity response. Construction professionals must adapt to the changing cybersecurity landscape. In this interactive session, participants will review basic cybersecurity terminology, see an example from a real-world cyberattack, and identify steps to mitigate cybersecurity risks in their own organizations.

Technology and Connectivity Challenges on Large Projects

MONDAY, OCT. 30 • 4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. EDT

Today, projects and programs need constant connectivity for teams to effectively communicate and share data. Any disruption can create costly issues and irreparable harm. This presentation will focus on new Wi-Fi and cellular technology tools and the challenges of implementing them on large-scale projects. Learn how these tools protect information and explore connectivity solutions on jobsites where traditional means of communication are inadequate.

The Value of a Nontraditional and Diverse Workforce

In this session, learn directly from “nontraditional” employees as they share their experiences in the workforce. Hear stories, lessons learned, wins, and losses from employees who are generally considered nontraditional, such as women, LGBTQ persons, and mid-life career changers. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of the challenges these employees face, why they feel supported for success at their respective firms, and how they add value to their firms in ways that more traditional employees may not.

Chris Lerma, CCM, CQM, PMP, from Kitchell is also a panelist.
