In the News: Gov. Harry W. Nice/Sen. Thomas “Mac” Middleton Bridge Replacement Project Wins DBIA National Merit Award
The Gov. Harry W. Nice/Sen. Thomas “Mac” Middleton Bridge Replacement Project, spanning the Potomac River from Newburg, Maryland, to Dahlgren, Virginia, has earned a 2023 Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) National Merit Award. Gannett Fleming provided construction management and inspection services for the project, representing the Maryland Transportation Authority.
The original 1.7-mile, two-lane bridge was replaced with a new, innovative structure. The updated Nice Bridge is a 61-foot-wide structure featuring four 12-foot-wide lanes and a central median, offering enhanced traffic capacity, safety, and access for wide-load vehicles. The project prioritized sustainability by reusing river sediment and materials from the decommissioned bridge to rejuvenate wildlife habitats and promote local oyster growth.
