LATEST HONOR RECOGNIZES THE IMPORTANCE GANNETT FLEMING PLACES ON DEI&B

November 28, 2023

The Central Penn Business Journal and Lehigh Valley Business named Gannett Fleming as a recipient of the inaugural Empowering Women award. The honor recognizes companies and organizations that show a strong commitment to supporting and developing women through programs, policies, and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B).

“Our DEI&B programs make Gannett Fleming a rewarding, equitable, and safe workplace, which supports being an architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) employer of choice,” said Bob Scaer, PE, Gannett Fleming CEO. “We have the highest number of female and minority employees in Gannett Fleming’s history, and our Connected Women at Gannett Fleming employee resource group is thriving and making a positive impact. While we’re honored to be recognized, we know we still have work to do. Being an inclusive employer is a journey that is never really finished, and I look forward to partnering with our employees to continue to propel our firm and the industry forward.”

The efforts that garnered the Empowering Women recognition include:

  • Connected Women’s initiatives, including the Connected Relationships Mentoring Program, which has paired over 500 employees in four years, and Connected Ambassadors, which offers leadership opportunities to more than 50 female employees across North America.
  • Participation in AEC industry associations that advocate for and advance women and minorities in our industry.
  • Gannett Fleming’s two annual engineering scholarships, which support AEC students from underrepresented groups, namely women in STEM and Black/African American students attending historically Black colleges and universities.
  • Ongoing education, including companywide unconscious bias training, on-demand leadership training for women, and companywide discussions around career journeys, thought leadership, avoiding burnout, and more.
  • All five award-winning ERGs collaborate via strategic planning and ERG Fusion events that drive employee engagement. Communities of Color at Gannett Fleming, Future Generations at Gannett Fleming, LGBTQ+ at Gannett Fleming, and Military Veterans at Gannett Fleming provide programming and education around intersectionality, cultural observances, and personal stories that further support women at different stages of their careers.
  • Gannett Fleming also conveys our commitment to DEI&B in our project work, designing solutions to provide accessibility and mobility to the people we serve.

“The inaugural Empowering Women award honorees know the importance of women in the workplace and work to support and advance their leadership,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, managing director of BridgeTower Media/Lehigh Valley Business and Central Penn Business Journal. “These businesses support mentoring for women and other programs that are clearly aimed at helping women succeed. Lehigh Valley Business and Central Penn Business Journal are proud to congratulate these organizations for recognizing the incredible value and power of women in the workforce.”

According to event organizers, Empowering Women is designed to showcase tangible and innovative efforts by companies, law firms, nonprofits, and other organizations to advance women in the workplace and community. Empowering Women honorees were selected by a panel of judges made up of the Lehigh Valley Business and Central Penn Business Journal leadership teams.
